Forum: etree Subject: I really don't like the new contribution system

Let me preface this by saying I love the Archive, and I understand you guys are trying to make it better. I was trying to refrain from jumping on the bitching bandwagon, because I know many of the issues raised by music "consumers" were navigation related. But I've got to say, I hate the new contribution system.

The first part is fine, create the item on the system it's ultimately going to live on. Makes sense, saves a lot of copying files around. But once you files are uploaded it goes downhill from there. Took me quite a while to figure out which link off the contribution page took me to the next step of the problem, and some of them produced errors. Then when I go to import the show, a process that used to be 99% automatic is now 99% manual. Whatever happened to gleaning all the details from the .txt file ? Or even the band ? Despite starting the whole process by filling in the band abbreviation and show date, you still have to pick the correct 'collection' to add you show to (anyone wanna wager on how many shows get misfiled in the collection above or below the intended one), and then give it the date (again), and manually fill in all the fields.
I used to upload overnight, then import the show when I got to work in the morning. It's fortunate I did it from home this morning as I had the .txt file available to cut & paste from. As it is I didn't bother filling in the title/show/creator/track # for the 20+ tracks per show for the derrivatives.
I'm still committed to getting as much of my tape archive as I can onto the IA, but damn, it's looking like it's going ot be a lot more work now, and that's certainly going to affect my enthusiasm for the project.

I posted a step-by-step guide here which is now linked from the FAQ...there've been several requests for more automation on the metadata insertion so I have to think that's in the suggestion queue.

Having some more autopopulation of info under the new system is indeed already on the list of things to see if doable!

A user's having to actively pick the "collection" to place their item is, however, a necessary/not likely changeable part of the new system AFAIK. It's not just LMA as a collection, but bands are now sub-collections.

I just completed my first contribution with the new system. My reaction and thoughts are pretty much the same. As it is currently this system is error prone, which to me is a bigger issue than the extra effort, and the extra effort is a big issue!

However, I must assume the automation is on its way...is it? Please don't say this is the final version and the way it's going to stay.

I would prefer a single server to upload to, but that's the least of it.

Thanks,
